RECOVERY DAY
CELEBATION AT THE STATE HOUSE
September 26, 2001
Festivities at the State House were preceded by an
enthusiastic march of the faces and voices of recovery from Boston City Hall
Plaza to the Boston Common. Kattie Portis,
Boston’s
Substance Abuse Policy Advisor, introduced Mayor Thomas Menino, who
enlivened
the meaning of recovery. The festivities
were enhanced by comedian Jimmy Tingle and Reverend Rodney Hart with the
beautiful music of the Teen Challenge Choir. Faces and voices of recovery,
joined by families and friends, then moved on to the State house to
celebrate the 2001 theme,
“We Recover Together: Family, Friends and Communities.”
H. Westley Clark, MD,
Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and Deborah Klein-Walker, Associate Public Health Commissioner and Interim Director of the Bureau of Substance
Abuse Services, joined in a town meeting to discuss The National Treatment Plan: Changing The Conversation. This plan includes 5 major focal
points. Invest for Results, No Wrong
Door to Treatment, Commit to Quality, Change Attitudes and Build
Partnerships. The Faces and Voices of Recovery are needed to make this a reality. The facilitation of Judah
Abijeh Dorrington and LaVerne Saunders and the performance of The Improbable Players helped to make
Recovery Day MOAR of a success! Senator
Therese Murray, Representatives Kevin Fitzgerald, Liz Malia, Gloria Fox, Martin
Walsh, and John Hart -----and
Executive
Office of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Gittens truly
validated
the road to recovery.

the Boston Public Health Commission
were followed by an energetic town meeting forum which spoke to the issues,
including stigma, advocacy vs. anonymity, insurance parity, housing, treatment
gaps, criminal justice, opiate treatment and women in recovery. Margot Manning,
Ray Kosinski, Rahim A., Dana Moulton, Planning Committee Members did a great
job. Immediate Past President, Leroy
Kelly turned the role over to Amos Marshall.
MOAR thanks Community HealthLink for its service, AdCare Hospital for

National
Recovery Advocacy Summit in Minnesota ~ October 5 -7
Maryanne
Frangules, Janice Archer and Dana
Moulton joined NEAAR members and 200 other members of the recovery
community at the summit sponsored by the Johnson Institute. William Cope
Moyers, the Institute’s President and Alliance Project’s
Jeff Blodgett were the hosts. It was an energetic recovery experience with William White,
Representative James Ramstad, Senator Paul Wellstone. Project RAP – Recovery Association of Portland (Oregon)
demonstrated how “relational theory” put into practice – builds communication
and consensus and commitment into the community’s ability to put case
management in place and deter the heroin overdoses.
According to Janice Archer and Dana Moulton:
“This was such a wonderful
opportunity to work together with people across the country, and to know that
there is a much larger organization attempting to identify, educate and assist
addiction issues. As the Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery
pulled together as a state on September 10, 2001, for its first ever statewide
meeting, it was also a wonderful feeling to be a part of the national effort
towards addressing a Nationwide Recovery Movement on October 5 - 7, 2001. We
are truly grateful to MOAR, NEAAR, and CSAT for giving us this opportunity. We worked to address
primary national targets. We came up with basically the same results: Addiction
Recovery Education, Treating the Whole Family at any Entrance, and Reducing Treatment Barriers. We feel that if
we are able to accomplish this, we reduce stigma and replace it with
understanding. We open doors for addiction recovery to adolescents/ families
and in housing, employment, and criminal justice systems.”
