MOAR New Bedford Meeting June25th– The issue of CORI took precedence for many
attendees.Claudia Jones, Joe Sims,
Manny Martinez, Robert Morercy, Robert Faria, Skip Jason, Mark Harmon, Jose
Martinez, Charles Smith, Ulysse Lapointe, David Duschene, Bruce Espey, Gene Skidmore, Kelly Sousa, and Joe
Sousa regarding impact on careers and housing, despite the fact they are in
recovery. Enhancing their own voice,
celebrating recovery, educating policymakers about addiction recovery appeared
paramount. Thus, a decision was made to look at the possibility of scheduling
at Reflections, an open house for Recovery Month, with opportunity for
discussion
Note:
Same day meeting got MOAR an invitation to participate in local access
television
program to publicize Recovery Month,
Annual Recovery Month Luncheon, and adolescent recovery support
network. Thank you!
MOAR Springfield Meeting
June 28th Attendees,
Pete Crumb, Diane Teta, Tanyss Martula, Mike Donahoe, Diane Kurtz, Melanie
Loval-Dielson, Bill Sciturro, Bob Pisani, Maryanne Frangules reviewed participation of its members at The
recent RCSP Conference- Diane Kurtz, Tanyss Martula, Bob Pisani as wonderful
demonstration of membership empowerment – of the work they have done to build the parent Support
Group. They got many questions of how
to----and how The Parent Support Group serves to teach parents signs, symptoms
of use, self care---and then some will ready themselves for public education to
do MOAR. Members reviewed Recovery Month Planning for The State House. An
afternoon public forum with focus on The National Treatment Plan drew a very
positive response. Discussion moved to
A W MA Recovery Month activity, such as a Phoenix Academy Celebration, Recovery
Walk, and a local hospital grand
rounds. Peter Crumb thanked MOAR
supporting The October 12 Adolescent Focused Western MA Substance
Abuse School Counselor’s Association Conference

MOAR Takes on Adolescent
Recovery Support Issues as a Major Focus
MOAR has been attending three regional – Boston, Worcester, and Florence youth focused human service interagency meetings across the state. The focus is to derive an interagency approach towards addressing the gaps in services with a working continuum of care. Parent support group and school counselor participation in The Florence meetings have brought a real hands on approach to the issue. In fact, Diane Kurtz , W MA Parent Support Group volunteer facilitator and Bob Pisani, Phoenix Academy Director will come to the Worcester meeting. Maryanne Frangules is working with DYS Coordinator Tricia Woods to start a Lowell meeting. You are invited.
Tanyss Martula
attends National Co-Occurring Disorders Meeting
Tanyss
Martula, West.MA MOAR member, attended a Washington, D.C, June 5th SAMHSA meeting of about 25 consumer
advocates from all over the U.S. The session was called "Consumer,
Survivors, Persons in Recovery and Family Members Discussion Groups" (from
the areas of both addiction and mental health). The first part of the
five hour meeting focused on the use of the Internet as a tool for
recovery/advocacy organizations as well as for helping recovering people seek
information and resources. An energetic discussion ensued around the table.
Approximately 5 "best"
Internet sites were also critiqued by the participants and it was noted that
links to information on addiction should be added to the depression web sites.
Consensus: it is human beings in relationship that create healing and
recovery and technology is limited. The facilitated meeting allowed
participants to share responses re: consumer involvement in managed care and state health care reforms.
Barriers to consumer involvement were discussed and activities, as MOAR's
Recovery Day, that build consumer participation/reduce stigma.
On that note, MOAR thanks Tanyss, Joe
Kelleher, and John Frazier for representing MOAR at conferences and activities
sponsored by MBHP-The Partnership,
EAPA, CASA , and New England Problems on Compulsive Gambling Conference.
A MOAR significant
issue: Movement to change the current CORI regulations is positive.
